Tradition
Task and Maneuver Training vs.
Today’s Scenario Based Training
What is Tradition Task and Maneuver
Training?
The FAA and Federal Regulations
devised a list of required task with
objectives
and standards needed to be
accomplished in order to receive a
certificate or rating.
In the past, flight training
consisted of flying to the practice
area, practicing those
task and returning to the airport in
repetition.
What is Scenario Based Training?
SBT is a training method that
uses a highly structured script of
real world experiences
to address aviation-training
objectives in an operational
environment.
Why?
Improper pilot decisions cause a
significant percentage of accidents
and incidents in aircraft today. SBT exposes the
client to a variety of potentially
abnormal situations, possible
hazards to flight and real world
experiences while the instructor
mentors the student in the
aeronautical decision making
process.
TAA aircraft have changed the role
of GA from an industry dominated by
pleasure flying to a viable
business tool and an alternative
to the scheduled airlines.
Not only is SBT making the skies
safer it’s cost effective too!
How?
SBT requires the pilot to manage
the resources available on the
flight deck, exercise sound
judgment, and make timely decisions.

Technically Advanced Aircraft (TAA)
have contributed to a shift in the
focus of aviation training to
include Aeronautical Decision Making
(ADM) and Risk Management (RM).
Single-Pilot Resource Management (SRM)
training requires the student to
combine traditional task and
maneuver-based training (TTMT)
with SBT to enhance ADM, RM, and SRM
skills without compromising basic
stick and rudder skills. Instead of
training pilots to pass a practical
test, SBT focuses on expertly
trained pilots with an increased
ability to manage real-world
challenges.
